State-wise, Maharashtra recorded the highest count of closed startups with 929 entities shut followed by 644 in Karnataka, 593 in Delhi, 487 in Uttar Pradesh, 301 in Telangana, and more.
Out of 1.52 lakh entities recognised as startups under the Startup India programme by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), 5,063 startups — 3.3 per cent of the total registered startup count — have been categorised as closed, that is dissolved or struck-off, as per the Ministry of Corporate Affairs basis status of entities as of December 5, 2024. The information was shared by Jitin Prasada, Minister of State in the Commerce Ministry in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The State/Union Territory (UT)-wise number of entities which have been recognised as startups by DPIIT as of 31st October 2024 and 5063 companies recognised as startups by DPIIT which are categorized as closed (i.e., dissolved/struck-off) as per the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) [basis status of entities as on 5th December 2024],” said Prasada in his response.
Meanwhile, registered startups have so far created over 16.6 lakh direct jobs across more than 55 industries as of October 31, 2024. Startups in IT services created the highest number of direct jobs, 2.04 lakh, followed by 1.47 lakh direct jobs created by startups in healthcare and life sciences, 94,060 by startups in professional and commercial services, 90,414 by education startups, 88,702 by startups in the construction sector, 88,468 by food and beverage startups, 87,983 by human resource startups, etc.
With respect to MSMEs registered with the government through the Udyam registration, 61,469 units have been shut as of November 15, 2024 since the launch of the portal on July 1, 2020. This included 60,909 micro units, 507 small units and 53 medium-sized units, FE Aspire had reported recently.
Over 12,000 MSMEs have been shut down in the last four months with the total count of closed units growing from 49,342 as of July 25, 2024 and 13,290 in FY23 while FY22 saw the closure of 6,222 MSMEs and FY21 recorded 175 units shutting down.
